The Actual Co — Media & Production Website

Media • Production • Web Design • Content Management

A client website built for The Actual Co, a media and production company requiring a platform to showcase their work and manage content without touching code.

The project centred on delivering a visually strong portfolio experience while giving the team full editorial control over their projects and media.

Overview

Media and production companies live and die by how their work is presented. The Actual Co needed a digital home that could carry the weight of visual storytelling — one that felt like an extension of their creative identity rather than a generic agency template.

The build prioritised cinematic presentation, structured project display, and a content management workflow that removed the technical barrier between the team and their own website.

My Role

  • Frontend Development
  • Website Design
  • Content Architecture
  • CMS Setup & Integration
  • Responsive UI Implementation

Challenge

Design and build a portfolio-driven website for a creative production company that:

  • Showcases video, photo, and production work in a compelling, media-first layout
  • Allows non-technical team members to add, edit, and manage projects independently
  • Maintains a high visual standard across all devices without sacrificing performance

The core tension was balancing editorial flexibility with a tightly controlled visual language — keeping the site looking intentional even as content evolves.

Approach

The design led with media. Large visuals, minimal text interference, and clear project categorisation to let the work speak first.

Key decisions:

  • Media-first layout with full-width visuals and clean project grid
  • Content structured around reusable project entries manageable via CMS
  • Consistent type and spacing system to preserve visual coherence regardless of content changes
  • Responsive behaviour optimised for both desktop browsing and mobile review

The content management layer was scoped to give the client maximum control over project entries, cover images, descriptions, and categorisation — without requiring developer involvement for routine updates.

Technical Implementation

Built on a lightweight, maintainable frontend stack with CMS integration providing the editorial backbone:

  • Structured content model for project entries (title, category, media, description)
  • Media-optimised image and video handling
  • Responsive grid and layout system
  • Clean navigation and filtering by work category

The architecture was intentionally kept lean — fast load times matter for a media company whose visitors will judge quality immediately.

Outcome

Delivered a live, fully managed portfolio site that gives The Actual Co a professional digital presence aligned with their creative output.

The client can independently add new projects, update existing entries, and keep the site current as their portfolio grows — no developer dependency for day-to-day content.

Reflection

This project reinforced how much a media company’s website is itself a piece of creative work. Every layout decision, spacing choice, and visual hierarchy call had to hold up against the standard of the content it was framing.

It also deepened my approach to client handoff — building for longevity means the system has to work without you in the room.
