I Went Live While Editing a Video. The Numbers Did the Rest.

I’m editing a YouTube video, mid-cut, trimming dead air. Then I open TikTok and just… go live. No plan for it, no announcement, just turned it on.

At the start of September I had 102 followers on TikTok. A small number, not one I was tracking closely. I go live a few more times, still mostly while editing, still with no real structure to it. By the time I check again I’m at 174.

That’s not a huge jump on paper. But it’s growth I didn’t expect from something I wasn’t trying to grow. Therefore I keep doing it.

The Pipeline Didn’t Change, the Behavior Did

The repurposing part was already in place: full YouTube video, cut down into clips for TikTok and Reels. That’s the system. What changed is I stopped treating the live stream as a distraction from the “real” work and started treating it as part of the work.

I’m not performing a live. I’m not talking to a camera pretending someone’s watching. I’m editing, thinking out loud sometimes, and people happen to be there. The video I’m cutting becomes the clips that go out later, and the live becomes its own thing on top of that, almost for free.

Why I Kept Going

I didn’t have a hypothesis going into this. I wasn’t testing whether “build in public, but live” works. I just noticed the number moving in the right direction and kept doing the thing that moved it.

That’s a different kind of decision-making than scripting a content calendar. But it’s the same instinct from the reels experiment: don’t wait to understand why something works before you keep doing it. Understand it later, if at all.

What I’m Watching Now

Whether the growth holds once the novelty of a live editing session wears off, or whether it was just early-follower momentum that flattens out.

Whether the people watching the live are the same people watching the clipped-down TikToks, or a completely different audience finding me through a completely different door.

Whether I keep this up once I’m not surprised by it anymore.

No conclusions yet. Just: 102 to 174, camera on while I work, see what it turns into.
